Today I turned 76

What a joy its is to become 76 when I have:

decades of technical knowledge

fewer reasons to impress people

stronger instincts

deeper permission to experiment

no patience for nonsense

and a studio full of embossings made from mysterious household materials.

Lately I’ve been thinking about how long it takes to arrive at one’s real work. Not the work made to prove competence, professionalism, or seriousness — but the work that feels inhabited.

The quieter work.

The work willing to risk subtlety.

The work that asks people to come closer. I

I’m beginning to suspect that age, at its best, doesn’t narrow the possibilities.

It refines them.
